GET “RED”DY FOR RED RIBBON WEEK ! OCTOBER 27th-31st
What is Red Ribbon Week? The National Red Ribbon Campaign is an annual community drug awareness program in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) which honors the late DEA Special Agent Enrique “KiKi” Camarena. Kiki was abducted in Mexico murdered by drug traffickers. Soon after Kiki's death, people everywhere started wearing Red Ribbons to symbolize their commitment to help reduce the demand for drugs in their communities. The act of wearing Red Ribbons took on national significance and grew into what is now known as the Red Ribbon Campaign.
Today, Red Ribbon Week is celebrated annually in October in cities throughout the nation. During Red Ribbon Week, children and adults all over the country wear Red Ribbons, take pledges, and participate in activities that show that they are committed to leading a drug-free lifestyle. And during Red Ribbon, we remember Kiki, the man who wanted to make a difference and whose legacy still lives on.
The GRE Staff and community strongly support Red Ribbon Week with Red Ribbon decorations, “Spirit Days” for each day of the week, and literature about the importance of staying away from illegal drugs. Additionally, the staff and students take a pledge to be drug free. The Colorado National Guard sponsors a helicopter “fly over and landing assembly” that includes famous local individuals promoting Red Ribbon Week and the importance of leading drug free lives.
The GRE Theme this year is: “Keep Your Head in the Game”
